Overview

Affordable feature-rich navigation,
stunning display and streamlined database updating

This compact 5-inch capacitive touchscreen boasts a bright, sunlight readable display complete with rich, interactive maps and a built-in GPS/GLONASS receiver that can be viewed in portrait or landscape modes for optimum customization. The aera 660 encompasses many of the features of the renowned aera® and GPSMAP® aviation portable series, adding Connext® wireless capabilities, Garmin WireAware™ wire-strike avoidance technology and more. Cost-effective database options along with built-in Wi-Fi® database updating capabilities allow customers to more easily access the most up-to-date data, including daily U.S. fuel prices. Bluetooth® supports the display of ADS-B “In” traffic and weather1 from a variety of sources, including the GDL® 39/GDL 39 3D, Flight Stream and the GTX 345 ADS-B transponder.

Dedicated Compact Portable Navigator
The aera 660 features a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that is optimized for cockpits and various types of flying. An elegant yet rugged design allows the aera 660 to withstand harsh environments, meeting stringent temperature tests and helicopter vibration standards. The Garmin signature direct-to feature is always available so it’s easy to command navigation functions or find nearest airports from any page. A mini-USB connector, microSD™ card slot and removable battery accompany a dedicated power button along the bezel of the aera. Depending on settings and external connections, pilots will receive up to 4 hours of battery life on a single charge. An intuitive user interface resembles that of the popular GTN™ 650/750 touchscreen series, aera 795/796 series and the Garmin Pilot™ app, so pilots can easily transition between the aera 660 and other Garmin products in the cockpit.

3D Vision
The 3D Vision page within the aera 660 leverages a worldwide terrain database to create a rich, 3D representation of rising terrain near the aircraft, while overlaying GPS-derived airspeed, altitude and vertical speed alongside flight plan information. 3D Vision also displays lateral and vertical (VNAV) deviation bars and includes a 360-degree HSI, which displays course deviation, track, bearing and more.

Bearing pointers can be manually configured to identify the nearest airport, complete with distance information. When connected to the GTX 345, GDL 39 3D or Flight Stream, the 3D Vision presentation is further enhanced with the display of pitch, roll and slip-skid information. A pilot-selectable presentation optionally displays flight instruments in round gauges or tapes overlaid on the 3D topographic landscape.

Connext Wireless Connectrivity
Wireless connectivity options set the aera 660 even further apart from other portables on the market. Wireless database updating capabilities add to the unique feature set of the aera 660. When connected to Wi-Fi, pilots can easily download and update aviation databases without the need to physically connect the aera to a computer. Additionally, the aera 660 supports connectivity with the Garmin VIRB® XE HD action camera, so pilots can control recording and take photos.

When paired with the GTX 345, Flight Stream or the GDL 39/GDL 39 3D, ADS-B traffic and weather1 is wirelessly transferred and displayed on the aera 660. ADS-B traffic information may be viewed on the moving map, IFR/VFR charts and dedicated traffic pages, which also leverages patent-pending features such as TargetTrend™ and TerminalTraffic™. Traffic trajectories and potential conflicts are easier to identify with TargetTrend, which incorporates relative motion technology to help pilots visualize the future position of nearby traffic targets relative to the aircraft. The traffic picture is further enhanced during taxi, takeoff and landing with TerminalTraffic, which detects and displays other aircraft or ground vehicles on runways or taxiways that are also broadcasting ADS-B position information. SafeTaxi® geo-referenced airport diagrams also aid in situational awareness by identifying runways, taxiways, FBO’s, hangars and more relative to the aircraft’s position on the airport surface. Subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather1 products may simultaneously be overlaid on the map page and dedicated weather pages for easy interpretation. Weather-related decision-making is easier with the aera 660, which helps pilots interpret datalink NEXRAD radar more easily by animating this imagery. Additionally, multiple weather products can be overlaid on a single weather page for better analysis.

Fuel Prices, Global Charting Options and More
Comprehensive chart options provide pilots with an easy path to a paperless cockpit in a compact device, which may be qualified for use as either a Class I or Class II Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). Geo-referenced IFR enroute, VFR sectional charts and Garmin FliteCharts® terminal procedures are available as part of the expansive database offerings associated with the aera 660. Using FliteCharts, pilots can easily view departure procedures (DPs), standard terminal arrival routes (STARs) and geo-referenced approach charts. Additionally, Garmin ChartView™ enables the display of Jeppesen charts with an optional subscription from Jeppesen. U.S. fuel price data is easily accessible on the map or within the airport directory database, so it’s easy to identify the lowest price of 100 LL and Jet A in the area. Similar to features found within other Garmin products, patented Smart Airspace™ is included in the aera 660 feature set. Smart Airspace highlights the airspace nearest the aircraft’s current altitude and de-emphasizes non-pertinent airspace so pilots can quickly identify their location relative to the airspace around them.

Using the optional global navigation database and many regional charting options, the aera 660 provides worldwide versatility. The aera 660 is available in 4 regional versions with select regional data preloaded for North America, South America, Atlantic and Pacific regions. While each version is only available for purchase from Garmin in the corresponding region, regional databases can be purchased for any unit from any region. For pilots in Europe, the Atlantic version of the aera 660 includes the Enhanced Basemap, which provides VFR operators with more visual landmarks and intersections that are often used when contacting air traffic control. Additionally, when selecting a street or intersection on the moving map of the aera, street names populate so it’s easier to identify aircraft location while navigating over an urban or unfamiliar environment.

Helicopter Optimization
The aera 660 contains built-in features tailored to helicopter operators, including Garmin WireAware™ wire-strike avoidance technology. WireAware overlays power line locations and relative altitude information on the moving map and provides both aural and visual alerting when operating near power lines. Altitude display is offered in both mean sea level (MSL) and above ground level (AGL), so they are easier to identify relative to the aircraft flight path. The standard obstacle database contains Hazardous Obstacle Transmission (HOT) lines, which typically include those that span rivers, canyons, valleys or those that are within the vicinity of airports. Obstacle databases with comprehensive power line coverage and HOT lines are also available for the U.S. and portions of Canada and Mexico. Additionally, VFR helicopter chart coverage throughout eight major metropolitan areas within the U.S. depict helicopter airways and routes, heliports with associated frequency and lighting capabilities, NAVAID information and obstructions. Coverage for the Gulf of Mexico is also available, which includes offshore oil drilling platforms and more. Operators may also incorporate City Navigator® NT street maps to enable address look-up functions within the aera to easily navigate to street intersections during off-airport operations.

Connect with Garmin Avionics
The aera 660 includes a yoke mount and cigarette lighter adapter as a standard accessory (pictured). Pilots can also connect an optional bare wire cable to the aircraft instrument panel and expand the utility of the aera 660 by utilizing power, audio and dual RS-232 connections. When paired with a navigator such as the GTN 650/750 touchscreen series or the GNS 430W/530W, the aera can receive flight plan data entered into the navigator over a serial port and remain synchronized throughout the flight. When connected to a NAV/COM such as the GTR 225, GNC 255, GTR 200, SL 30 or SL 40, frequencies and airport identifiers can also be transferred from the aera to the corresponding NAV/COM. Additionally, ADS-B traffic and weather1 can be transferred via the wired connection to the aera 660 when linked to the GTX 345, GDL 39 or GDL 39 3D.

Low-Cost Database Options
The Garmin Navigation Database available for North America offers a cost-effective path to incorporate the latest database information into the aera 660. Navigation data includes the option to load and activate instrument approach procedures, load flight plan data and more. The Garmin Navigation Database has an option for a single update. There are also a variety of cost-effective annual bundles available, such as the U.S bundle, which includes the Garmin Navigation Database, FliteCharts®, IFR/VFR Charts, Terrain, Obstacles, SafeTaxi® and the AOPA Airport Directory with fuel prices. For worldwide coverage, Jeppesen NavData is also available for purchase. Please check flyGarmin.com for current pricing and ordering. Once purchased, these databases can be conveniently downloaded and updated on the aera 660 via Wi-Fi.

With its long list of features, the aera 660 combines many of the capabilities of panel-mounted avionics with a value-packed, purpose-built package. It’s a dedicated aviation portable that’s ready to fly, right out of the box.

I used Pilotshop because they had a good price and the projected delivery date was 2 days after ordering. The unit did arrive on the planned delivery date. I am very pleased with the Garmin Aera 660. I also have a Garmin GDL 50 so the Aera 660 gives me weather and traffic information as well as being a very useful back up to my Ipad which occasionally overheats in the Florida sunshine. I would thoroughly recommend the Garmin Aera 660 and Pilotshop who provided a fast efficient service.

Replaced a Garmin 396 with the Aera 660. The touch screen is great, the menus are easy. Wired to the audio panel and the 660 gives callouts. Hardwired to the GDL 50 for traffic and weather, good information and the screen is adequate in size. The Air Gizmo dock was a direct replacement for the 396. Very easy installation. Well worth the cost for the traffic and weather being on the panel.

August 31, 2020

Bought the Garmin Aera 660 just prior to a VFR ferry flight of a Grumman Lynx from WI to NM - 900 + nm. With a bubble canopy, I never had an issue being able to read the display in the sunlight on the provided yoke mount. Flight planning, airport information and flight following on what ever chart I choose to use was very intuitive. The menu manipulation was simple and proved easy to access especially when encountering afternoon uplifting passing by, then over the front range. I was able to quickly calculate my w&b, verify my TAS and spin current winds in the provided tools section. Extremely useful addition to a panel full of 35 year old questionable or inoperative avionics.

Works great but kinda small. I think the new 760 would be just right. WIFI capability is great for upgrading software. I wish I could figure out how to update the data base using the WIFI in the unit.

After about a year of use, I am very pleased with my Aera 660. It has exceeded my expectations. I have been a Garmin portable user for many years and this is a nice step forward in evolution. Its solid in performance. Never had any glitches or hangups. The processor is quick and I cannot make it lag or delay. It connects easily by hard wire connection to my GDL 50R. It drives my Dynon autopilot reliably and as expected. It also communicates seamlessly with my Samsung Note 9 running the Pilot app. Wifi connectivity is reliable as well, using my phone as a hot spot to run updates. The only drawback is the glare on the screen. Ill be buying a screen protector to help address this issue next.

I bought this to use in an antique biplane where an ipad or the like is really hard to handle or mount. Replaced a 496 in the same role and am very happy with it. The internal antenna and mounting are perfect for this application. I did add a ball and link mount that attaches to a tube in the fuselage. Very easy to operate one handed.

Excellent replacement for Garmin 496. Since Garmin no longer supports the 396-496 units, this is the one you want for a replacement.

October 4, 2018

Great little GPS unit! Bought this to have a dedicated panel-mount GPS for my 172. Bought the Air Gizmos Panel Mount for about $125. Luckily, the exact place I wanted to mount it had a radio stack in it previously, so it fit the 5.3 opening perfectly and already had anchor nuts installed. GPS unit is running off of aircraft power and I bought the power cord that has the additional cord running to the GDL-39, which will sit up on the dash in the future.

I was not sure if I wanted a designated GPS or just stick with foreflight, but now that I can see the difference in the quality of the screen.... I love the Garmin. Great screen, can be seen ALWAYS and the touchscreen is so nice as well. I fly multiple different airplanes and needed something portable and small, but know I will also get the bigger one to install in the 185. Highly recommend this GPS

Great device, I has been using Garmin Aera 796 and the Aera 660 work like that, i prefer the small screen to be using in the yoke mount, five stars to Garmin Aera 660, I buyed the Aera 660 North America and Central America version with the coupon update the recently worldwide database and South America Database it works amazing, good price, good resolution, good options and good choise

I bought this to replace a Garmin GPSMAP 496. Very happy with the unit. The screen is bright enough to read in the sun. The touch screen controls are easy to use as well. No problems with hitting the wrong area or double tapping. The unit is wired into my JPI FS-450 Fuel Flow computer and it works well with that. The database is easily updated with WIFI. Very nice unit.

June 26, 2017

I like this unit. It has lots of features that surprised me. The larger buttons are great. The logic is intuitive. It does not come with a manual so you have to refer to the online manual which is over 100+ pages. I bought it to replace my HP PDA that was driving my TrioAvionics autopilot in my Long-EZ experimental. It is now installed and is working well with my autopilot. So, why did I give it a tentative 4 stars? I had difficulty downloading the update. I finally succeeded but it was not easy and frustrating. I was on the brink of calling customer service but figured out I would strike out because it was over the holidays. The worst part was the timing on the free update. I bought the unit on December 20th and when I installed the update with the free coupon the update only got me thru the end of December and the middle of January 2021!!! I have contacted Garmin to see if they will give me another coupon that will extend my update but have not heard back yet. If they dont extend it I will be out another $149 for the latest update. So we will see how Garmin handles this one. Once again, I am happy with the functioning of the unit, just not the update. If they dont give me/you an update coupon then decide when you want to buy the unit. Check when the update will give you a full year of use..

Ive purchased this Garmin Aera 660 with South America database. The equipment works great, but the database offered does not include airports charts and enroute IFR/VFR charts. Neither private airfields list(LAD: declared optimus place) that you can find en apps like RWY for android. For the same price as the North america edition database that its does include all of that, that is unfair

Alberto R
January 31, 2018

Great clarity and the touch screen is very responsive. There is no pilot guide with the unit and using the online guide is a real pain. The Garmin tech support are getting very short with me, having to call to resolve issues. I never had that problem with them before.

UPDATE. Garmin listened... airspace ceilings and bases are now shown on the map page! No more having to touch the screen to get that information. Rating now 4 1/2 stars.

Barry
December 8, 2016

Great unit BUT has some flaws... Physically. Screen Glare. Has a polished screen like the IPad which reflects everything back. Needs a glare screen which hopefully wouldnt reduce the backlighting. Backlighting. Garmin advertises Sunlight Readable BUT the brightness or backlighting is NOT strong enough even when set to the brightest setting in direct sunlight. Add the glare and its almost as bad as the Ipad. Software. Sectional charts. Zoomed in they look great. When you zoom out, they become unreadable and unusable. Could have something to do with the screen resolution. The unit needs a higher resolution screen so it can display the higher resolution sectionals. Airspace ceilings and bases. For some reason they are not displayed on the map page. You have to touch the airspace on the screen to get that information (or go to the sectionals page). Doesnt make sense. Garmins app Garmin Pilot displays this info on the map page without touching the screen. The way it should be. Software Wish list... Be able to split the screen. Be able to position and lock in that position the data fields where I want them. Currently there is one in each corner. Difficult to read since you have to look elsewhere and focus again. Would be easier to see and read it they were together. Would also like to see 6 user data fields instead of just 4. Larger fonts option for us older guys.

Barry
April 6, 2016

Pros the screen is sunlight readable. The device will not shutdown when its in direct sunlight. This was the primary reason why I bought it. Cons, Radio interference with the Garmin charger/ cigarette lighter adapter. Basic updates of map data are outrageously expensive. Changing a flight plan in the air is not as easy as Flyq or Foreflight, not impossible but hard enough where I dont use it to reroute. The Adsb traffic in GDL 39, GDL 50, or GDL 52 are essentially a scam because Garmin refuses to allow you to import data to their device so they can sell you their own product. The ADS-B in options from Garmin are pitiful and hard to justify considering the cost of Foreflight and other portable adsb system are $200-400 where you would spend over $1,200 for the garmin Aera and GDL-50.

Havent had opportunity to fly yet. VERY disappointed that Garmin didnt supply the bare wire cradle to install in aircraft. I need the bare wire cradle to hook up. Shouldnt have to spend more money to install. Carrying case should also be included. Obviously dont want to leave the unit in the aircraft when away from home.

Mel
May 11, 2018

In and of itself it is ok but for the price they should include a carry case and include an extra cradle to hardware to the panel. ACS was quick on shipment, but slow on trade-in process 8 days.

Cannot load simultaneously Canadian and US IFR/VFR Chart (sectional, VNC). You have to chose between one or the other. FlightChart, Obstacles,SafeTaxi, is good for both US and Canada. Wishlist: XMWeather transfer thru GDL69 and Flight Stream

If you can use a mini i-Pad I would suggest it. for one thing an important thing to me is an HSI well the 660 does not have one. If you need an approach in an emergency I could not find it. I have been using the 776 and before it the 676 or whatever it was and I relied on the HSI for long range nav out in the Caribbean. The 660 does not have it or it is not a prominent feature in the unit.

Bought this about year ago - there seems to be no clinometer sensor in this device . If you lean this device to right or left there is no change in horizon on 3d view. The skid/slip indicator is there on 3d view but is inactive or frozen. The most recent software (3,70) is installed in the device. I have old Garmin 196 which has clinometer sensor installed. There is a gauge which show shows the (left/right lean) position. I am not going to buy extra GDL50 or whatever to have the sensor available for a price from 600 to thousands of dollars - sensors which can be found on any smartphone

Just got to try my item Garmin Aera 660, very disappointed with this product, no altitude reader without the purchase of other items, no 3D without other products, very uninformed with the product advertisement on the web site. Just not what I thought I was getting.

I may raise the rating later, but right now I wish I had never purchased the AERA 660. I have found updating to be a tremendously frustrating experience. havent been able to. When I first purchased it I was able to hook to my home wifi, but now it refuses to do so..
