Better still, you can use our Connext® wireless connectivity to stream SiriusXM services onto multiple Garmin aviation portables (including aera® 660, aera 796 or aera 795 series) as well as iPad® tablets and other mobile devices with the Garmin Pilot™ app. So you get more access — on more devices — without spending more money.

Satellite-delivered Weather

Continuous SiriusXM satellite updates — accessible by ground and air — can help you make better, more timely flight decisions. The SiriusXM network’s powerful satellites deliver seamless coverage at any altitude across the continental U.S. and its coastal regions as well as southern Canada. (See coverage map.) Choose from available SiriusXM Aviation weather packages that provide METAR data and animated NEXRAD imagery as well as current reports on precipitation, lightning, winds aloft, echo tops, turbulence, freezing levels, TFRs and more¹. And to help you maintain the most current weather picture, your GDL 51 receiver can queue the weather from SiriusXM while your display device is sleeping or turned off so it automatically updates when you turn the screen back on.

Great Sound Made Easy

By simply connecting a compatible Bluetooth® headset or audio panel to GDL 51, you can wirelessly listen to your choice of high-quality audio entertainment channels provided by SiriusXM¹. Volume adjustments and station selection may be accessed through your compatible Garmin aviation portable or mobile device app. If you prefer, a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack positioned on the side of your GDL 51 makes it easy to provide a hardwired audio out connection to an auxiliary device or audio panel in your aircraft.

Built-in GPS and Attitude Sensors for SVX™ Display

In addition to its satellite weather and audio entertainment capabilities, your GDL 51 receiver’s feature set includes a built-in WAAS GPS receiver. This enables GDL 51 to deliver highly accurate aircraft position, speed and altitude information to your compatible mobile device app. Also, built-in attitude sensors enable select Garmin aviation portables and apps with our SVX synthetic vision technology to serve as a backup attitude reference² during your flights. With virtual terrain, obstacles, runways, horizon cues, HSI, GPS speed, altitude and more, this brings a whole new perspective to your portable navigation.

Battery Power for Hours

GDL 51 is a true go-anywhere device. A built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows GDL 51 to wirelessly receive SiriusXM data for up to 7 hours on a single charge. And for operation connected to power, you can plug in via the included vehicle power cable or microUSB port positioned on the side of the receiver.

XM weather works good on the ground before takeoff. I never listen to music in an aircraft. I havent tried the attitude function yet but I expect it will work just fine.

I finally got it working. Connecting with Sirius XM was challenging due to connectivity issues with Sirius XM. There were no issues with the GDL51because once

GARMIN GDL 51 GPS SXM WEATHER AND ATTITUDE

August 26, 2021

Better than any other portable SiriusXM weather option for the cockpit: light, ridiculously-long battery life, easy to use, etc. Its surprisingly heavy, probably because its mostly battery the weight, combined with its rubber bottom, means that it doesnt slide around on the dash, even in turbulence. The one caveat is that the bluetooth connectivity is still a little flaky, at least with Android devices. It drops in and out a lot, disconnects devices entirely sometimes, and forgets its auto-reconnect options. By comparison, the bluetooth link between my panel-mounted Garmin GTX 345 transponder and the same Android devices is rock solid (so the problem is probably not the Android devices). Hoping this gets fixed in a future system-software release.

Gdl51 works great except one problem. One of the main readons i purchased it was for the surface anaylis. The fronts and isobars . If you have,Garmin Pilot , it is not set up for the analyst chart. I would have kept my gdl39 if i had known and saved the money

Q: Is there an additional antenna required for ADSB weather and traffic on the Garmin GDL 51 / 51R?

The Garmin GDL 51 / 51R is a Sirius XM receiver only. It does not also receive ADS-B information. For that you will need to order the Garmin GDL 52 / 52R which will receive both Sirius XM and ADS-B.

Q: Does the GDL 51 portable unit receive the XM and GPS signals as is (say sitting on to of glare sheiks) or does one need a separate plug in antennas to capture the signals? If so which specific XM and GPS Antennas work?

The GDL 51 portable unit includes internal GPS and SiriusXM antennas. You do have the option of using external antennas if so desired.

Q: Does the GDL 51 / 51R receive XM Weather with other APPS? I am specifically looking at FltPlan Go and WSIs Pilot Brief?

Garmin states that this is for use with the Garmin Pilot App, other Garmin Portable systems, and ForeFlight only.

Q: How to control the entertainment channel and volume without the Garmin Pilot app?

Garmin pilot app is the only interface available for the device to listen to music.

Q: Will the GDL51 receive adsb in on the aera660 and forflight on the ipad via bluetooth at the same time?

No, the GDL 51 does not receive ADS-B. It only receives GPS and SiriusXM. For ADS-B in signal, see the GDL 50 or GDL 52.
