Overview

Designed by our dedicated “Team X” engineering group specifically for the experimental amateur-built (EAB) and light sport aircraft (LSA) markets, the affordable G5 electronic flight instrument delivers exceptional performance, reliability and ease of installation as an all-in-one backup or primary “glass cockpit” display. The crisp, sunlight-readable 3.5” LCD fits into a standard 3-1/8” round cutout, taking up just a fraction of the space and weight previously required by conventional gyro-based instruments.

G5 has 2 pilot-selectable main page formats: a PFD page and a DG (directional gyro) or HSI (horizontal situation indicator) page. VHF or GPS navigation inputs are required to drive the HSI display; for GPS interface, an optional GAD™ 29 navigation data adapter is required. By combining visual cues and data readouts once scattered across a myriad of instruments, G5 makes flight information easier to scan — so pilots can respond more quickly and intuitively to any inflight situation.

Rock-solid Attitude Reference
When configured as a primary attitude indicator, G5 uses solid-state AHRS reference to provide smooth, steady and reliable horizon-based pitch and roll indications. In addition to aircraft attitude, G5 will also support display of airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, slip/skid, turn rate, configurable V-speed references, barometric setting and selected altitude — as well as visual alerts upon arriving at a preselected altitude. A built-in GPS receiver and antenna (with an option for external GPS antenna connection) provides highly accurate groundspeed and ground track readouts. Plus, a dedicated rotary knob on the unit allows for easy adjustments to altitude bugs and barometric pressure settings.

Gain a Clearer Sense of Direction
To provide even more situational awareness, the G5 instrument can also function as a DG or HSI in your panel. When paired with an affordable GMU 11 magnetometer and select VHF Nav/Comms or GPS navigators (interfaced with optional GAD 29 navigation data adapter), G5 can serve as your primary reference source for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and/or GPS course guidance — as well as providing distance and groundspeed indications. The unit displays both vertical and lateral GPS/VOR/LOC course deviation when available (additional equipment may be required). And you can use the G5 instrument’s rotary knob to easily make and adjust course selections — or to control heading bug settings in DG installations. Because the GMU 11 is connected to the CAN bus network, a single magnetometer can supply heading information to 2 G5 units simultaneously.

Dual Displays Double Your Options
By installing dual G5 displays in your panel, you not only gain dedicated instruments for attitude reference and directional gyro/HSI guidance — you also gain the advantages of backup redundancy with dual ADAHRS and reversionary display capability. In such installations, a secondary G5 can revert to display attitude information (consolidated with heading indication) in the unlikely event of a failure in the primary attitude indicator position. For added “get home” protection, each G5 display is available with an optional backup lithium-ion battery, which can provide up to 4 hours of emergency operation in case of an aircraft electrical outage or shutdown. And if you use one of our aera® series aviation portables¹ as a backup, you can fly with battery-powered moving map navigation guidance — as well as the G5 instrument’s flight display information — to make that aircraft electronics outage virtually a non-event.

It’s Even Better with G3X
When used as a backup instrument for your G3X, G3X Touch or other compatible glass display system, G5 provides a full range of supplemental EFIS capabilities. So, if needed, it can be used to maintain the majority of your flight display and autopilot control functions — including the ability to fly coupled GPS approaches. G5 will also provide backup ADAHRS reference to the primary displays. So whatever happens, with a G5 electronic flight instrument in your system, you can count on a wider range of options in virtually any shutdown scenario.

Stand-alone Flight Instrument with Autopilot
G5 may be installed with a GMC 305 or GMC 307 autopilot control panel and up to 3 GSA 28 smart servos to perform as a stand-alone flight instrument with integrated autopilot functions. In addition, the GTN™ 750/650 series2 (and legacy navigators2) or a Garmin portable GPS such as aera 660, aera 795 or aera 796 may be connected to the serial port on G5, enabling the autopilot to couple laterally to the flight plan and vertically to support VNAV descents to pattern altitude. Other lateral and vertical autopilot modes selectable from GMC 305 or GMC 307 include heading, pitch, roll, altitude hold, vertical speed hold and airspeed hold. Even the control panel’s level (LVL) mode button is supported to engage the autopilot and restore the aircraft to level flight at the press of a button.

Learn More About G5
A highly flexible and scalable solution designed to fit a broad range of panels and configurations, the G5 electronic flight instrument brings new levels of confidence and situational awareness to your experimental/light sport cockpit. For added peace of mind, your EFIS investment is covered by our industry-leading Garmin warranty — and backed by our No. 1-ranked product support team.

GARMIN G5 EXPERIMENTAL W/ LPM KIT W/ 4FT WIRE PIGTAIL

August 24, 2021

Works as expected except for data logging. The G3X system creates a new log file each time the system is booted and log files are all a manageable size. The G5 maintains only one log file with records being appended. The G5 CSV log file soon becomes too large to be imported into Excel. I hope Garmin will change data logging so a new log file is created for each boot, just as is done in G3X experimental system.

Promised delivery date was spot on and it arrived in excellent condition. My installation integrated the G5 with the existing G3x system which automatically configured most of the setup. I found the G5 display tracked very well with the G3, was bright with excellent contrast, and very readable in sunlit conditions.

Worth every penny... especially considering the huge price break for an experimental unit. Replaced my vacuum DG with this G5 (plus the magnetometer). Easy to install, not very susceptible to interference (even with the magnetometer mounted in my wingtip next to my strobe), and works great. Never set a DG again!

I have two of these installed, one in an RV-8, the other in a Lancair. They work perfectly, are easy to read and use. The attitude indication is more accurate than any of my other EFIS AHRS units. Firmware updates are easy via the SD card and they keep making them better and better. Highly recommended!

Replaced a Tru Trac Gemini in my RV-6 that tru trac does not support anymore since King bought them. This is so much better. The gemini would only display the VS in the pitch axis, so setting on the ground in my tail dragger it showed a level flight attitude. Also it did wierd things in the roll axis beyond 60 degrees The garmin is so much smoother and the display is much crisper and easier to read in sunlight. Great product easy to wire and set up for stand alone operation.

Lost my vacuum pump and decided to apply the $500 towards a G5 which relegated my AI, DG, pump, regulator and suction gauge to the surplus bin. A net change of -8 lbs. The G5 is wonderful, very simple to install and pairs nicely with the Aera 660. Initial set up was super easy. The Spruce harness is well constructed but not marked. You need a meter to determine the pin out. The HSI feature nicely displays the Aeras nav data and makes the Aeras marginal VNAV feature very usable. Ill be buying a second G5 as a dedicated HSI/backup PFD.

Replaced a vacuum-driven attitude indicator in my RV-6 with a G5. OMG what a lovely little instrument it is. Ive been using it for 6 months now. Very comprehensive feature set for such a small and relatively cheap package. The only thing its missing which I think it should have is a g-meter display (it has enough sensors its only software and screen real estate) So impressed with it, Im about to buy my second unit to replace the vacuum-driven DG, so I can run it as a HSI and completely eliminate the vacuum system and mechanical CDI from the aircraft. Two G5s driven by a GNS430W coupled to an autopilot is a remarkably cheap and featureful way to turn a steam-gauge sixpack E/AB aircraft into a pretty capable IFR platform.

Five stars to customer service agent Donna McElroy. Not so many for the ordering experience. After numerous delays I finally have the G5. No paper work in the box - at all. No warranty card, no how to install, use, etc. Six calls, three to customer service and three to avionics, twice being sent to the ozone, I met Donna McElroy who took the time, only about five minutes, to ferret out the problem which she said she had never encountered. Thank you Donna. So, I have the PDF manuals which I get to print with my own resources. $1,300 cant cover the manual? Garmin has an online warranty page but its been down the last few days. McElroy is the best resource Aircraft Spruce has. Give her a raise!

I bought the G5 mostly so I could have an attitude indicator without installing a vacuum system. It was easy to install and configure for my needs. I haven’t installed a gps antenna for it but I recommend one because I was losing signal in the turns. There wasn’t any documentation in the box however are there 2 manuals available online once you find them. Both are fairly large so I did not print either. I don’t keep my tablet at the shop or I would have downloaded the manuals and used it. Instead, I just walked to the office and looked at it on the desktop whenever I had a question. The harness I ordered with it appears to be top quality. The wires are labeled.

The G5 has Some problems with a slow 360 turn as a bank angle of 5 to 10 degrees. Half way the turn its starts te reallign and If you come out of the turn it show the turn bank angle. after some time it starts to reallighn If you keep on flying streat ahead. Than the Heading/Track and Groundspeed Numbers are much to small and are unreadable as magenta against a black background is poorly readable, same with the HSI page, track heading groundspeed and error bug are unreadable in an airplane in flight with sunlight. My opinioun up to know is that Garmin has Packed to many functions in the instrument and have not took ergonomisch in recreational or experimental in to account.

Q: I didn't see the optional battery for the Garmin G5 on your website. Is it available?

Yes. The optional battery is part # 11-14314.

Q: For installation in an instrument panel in a metal aircraft, is a remote GPS antenna needed and if so, which antenna is recommended?

An internal GPS antenna is included so a remote GPS antenna is not necessary. However, the GA 35 GPS antenna can be installed if preferred.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 include AOA functionality?

No. The Garmin G5 does not AOA capabilities.

Q: What are the exterior dimensions of the front panel of the Garmin G5?

|The front panel dimensions are 3.42" X 3.6".

Q: Can this experimental version (part # 11-14312) unit installed in certified aircraft or is it just for homebuilts?

This version, part # 11-14312, is intended for use in experimental (homebuilt) aircraft only. For certified aircraft, please see part # 11-14579 or 11-14582.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 electronic flight instrument have outputs to drive an autopilot? If yes, does it command roll steering?

It will drive a GSA 28 servo (Garmin G3X servo) via the can-bus input/output on the G5.

Q: Will the Garmin G5 instrument work correctly in a tail dragger?

Yes, the G5 will function properly in a tail dragger.

Q: Is it possible to read the voltage on the aircraft bus on the Garmin G5?

No, the Garmin G5 does not read volts.

Q: Does the heading indicator in the Garmin G5 work on a stand-alone unit?

In the STC'd version and experimental there is a compass / heading strip on the top of the display. This is based on built-in AHRS and GPS info.

Q: Can this new Garmin G5 instrument display both track and magnetic heading? Can the heading readout use a remote mounted Garmin magnetometer independent and not connected to any other Garmin instruments?

The G5 can use a magnetometer only when tied in with a G3X system. The G5 is a pitot static and GPS based instrument. There is no independent function for a standalone magnetometer/G5 combination. The heading readout uses GPS unless paired with the G3X.

Q: What is the total weight of the Garmin G5?

8.8 oz (249.5 g), unit; 4.5 oz (127.6 g) battery (optional)

Q: I am designing the installation for an RV-8 and don't see the power requirements for the Garmin G5. What are the power requirements and what size CB should be used for this unit?

The G5 can be wired to either 14 or 28 volts DC. A 5 amp circuit breaker should be used in series with the power when wiring and installing.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 instrument display g-meter readings?

No, it does not have a g-meter.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 have an Altitude Encoder output which can be used for Mode C Transponder reply?

Yes. The G5 outputs altitude encoder data to a compatible transponder. Both Icarus and Shadin-format messages are output when using this setting. Please note that the transponder must be able to read RS-232 data.

Q: Whats included in the box with the Garmin G5 experimental? Is it the instrument only? Do I need to order the installation kit and a harness? Battery extra as well?

Part # 11-14312 is the G5 instrument and User Manual only. Part # 11-14315 includes a 5 foot standard harness as well. If you order the unit only version, you will need to order the install kit separately. If you order the unit + harness version, the install kit is included. The backup battery must be ordered separately regardless of whether you order the harness or not.

Q: I intend to use the G5 in my glider (high performance sailplane). What is the current draw at full screen brightness? We do carry LiFe 9Ah batteries these days but we also do long flights of over 8 hours.

In a 14v system, the G5 draws .25 amps maximum. In a 28v system, it draws .125 amps maximum.

Q: Is the heading at the top of the G5 the ground track from the GPS?

No, it is from the magnetometer when installed with a G3X system.

Q: I intend to use the G5 for experimental aircraft as a standalone device in my plane. Is the HSI page still usable when the device isnt connected to other Garmin devices/GPS? In other words, does the non-STCd version of the G5 have an internal database with all world airports loaded? If not, how do one enter/select a waypoint for HSI navigation?

The G5 does not have an airport database build inside. It can only display HSI info when connected to an approved GPS source.

Q: Can the barometric pressure setting on the Garmin G5 be configured in Hectopascals rather than inches?

Yes, when configuring the instrument, metric can be selected for barometric pressure which will display hPa.

Q: If for some reason the Garmin G5 lost the GPS signal, what would happen with the attitude information?

The G5 has pitot static ports that would provide the airspeed, altitude, and attitude information in the case of a lost GPS signal.

Q: I do not have a CAN bus installed in the airplane, can the Garmin G5 be hooked up to 12V and Ground without the CAN bus?

Yes, the CAN-bus is for a G3X system. If you are using the G5, as a standalone unit, then you do not need a CAN-bus.

Q: Can the experimental version of the Garmin G5 be switched from Attitude Indicator to Heading Indicator and vice-versa?

Yes. The HSI functions can be accessed from the PFD display.

Q: Will the Garmin G5 work effectively in an experimental helicopter?

Per Garmin: there has not been any helicopter vibration testing done on the G5 to work in helicopters.

Q: Can I connect a Garmin G5 experimental with a 796 GPS?

Yes, you can.

Q: I wish to use only one G5 used in attitude mode, connected to an autopilot and a GNS530. I already have two CDIs, so do not need a second G5 with HSI. Is this feasible/possible? Is there a heading bug when in the attitude indicator mode?

The non-certified unit will interface with an autopilot system. If no magnetometer is present the ai will show trk instead of hdg. A track or heading bug will be displayed while in autopilot mode.

Q: I am thinking about replacing the DG in my RV-4 with a Garmin G5 used in HSI mode. Will it interface wirelessly with my Garmin Aera 660?

No, the Garmin G5 has no wireless capabilities.

Q: Can the airspeed tape on the Garmin G5 be configured in kilometres per hour?

No, it cannot.

Q: Is the Garmin G5 compatible with the Trutrak Sorcerer autopilot?

No, it is not. The experimental Garmin G5 is only designed for the Garmin G3X autopilot system.

Q: Regarding the G5 EFIS for experimental aircraft: Can I choose between knots or MPH on the speed tape? Also, can the altitude be in metric units?

Yes, for the G5 you can select between these available units of measurement within the configuration page.

Q: Is the Garmin GA35 the only GPS antenna usable with the Garmin G5? Since the G5 is a WAAS antenna Im thinking that a less expensive GPS antenna would be adequate for simple the alignment functions of the G5 rather than the expensive GA35 antenna.

The G5 can receive GPS position information using the unit's internal antenna, however, the reception quality is dependent upon the installation. For best results, an external antenna is recommended, with the approved models being: Comant 2480-201, or the Garmin GA 26C, GA 35, GA 36, GA 56, or GA 57C. Any equivalent antenna that meets the specifications will work with the G5.
Frequency Range: 1565 to 1585 MHz.
Gain:16-25 db typical, 40 db max.
Noise figure: Less than 4.00 dB.
Nominal Output Impedance: 50 Ohm.
Supply Voltage: 4.5 to 6.5 VDC.
Supply Current: up to 60 mA

Q: On the Garmin G5 with 4 foot harness option, what exactly is the harness wired for? Is it just a power and ground harness or are all the connectors pigtailed out for all the inputs for nav and /or autopilot option? Thanks.

The Garmin G5 with 4 ft harness option will include:

  • G5 unit
  • G5 Installation kit
  • 4 foot power/ground
  • 4 foot RS232 data line

Q: Two questions: 1 - Can the Garmin G5 AI & HSI be connected to a Garmin 496 for Course Information? 2 - Can the G5 AI & HSI be connected to a Garmin 496 for Auto Pilot Information? Now, for the HARD question: If so... HOW? Do I need the GAD 29B?

The G5 can be connected to a Garmin 496 for course information. To do this, you would need the power/data cable 11-02694 which breaks out the wires needed to connect to an external device and send the NMEA GPS data needed. In regards to autopilot, the Garmin 496 could provide this data but it would not be through the G5. It would need to be wired directly to your autopilot unit.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 EFIS for experimental aircraft be set up as an HSI.

Yes, this unit can be setup as an HSI.

Q: Can the Garmin G-5 display a flight plan from a GTN 650 (all legs with colored active leg) as the Aspen 1000 does?

No, the G5 cannot display all legs of a flight plan with a colored active leg.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 show TAS? Would need OAT temp probe or a knob to dial in OAT? Does it interface with a 430?

The G5 can be connected to a GNS 430W for gps data. The G5 manual does not refer or shows a pin out for an oat probe. PER THE G5 MANUAL, Under normal operating conditions, the G5 provides the following air data information: Indicated Airspeed (IAS), Barometric Altitude Vertical Speed.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 be connected to a Garmin Aera 500?

No, these two devices cannot be connected.

Q: When a G5 is paired with a 430W gps will the navigation mode (HSI) show both a glideslope and localizer? This would be for an experimental aircraft.

Per the G5 manual, the G5 can show both the glide slope and localizer when using the GAD 29.

Q: How does the experimental Garmin G5 differ from the certified G5(s)? Apart from certification are the differences apparent and substantial?

The certified G5 will come with complete with mounting bracket and connectors. The experimental G5 will require separate purchase. The certified version will only display it's primary function, while the experimental allows to switch between top and bottom. The certified version is locked on it's primary function. The experimental version is more versatile in the screens it allows you to access from a single unit. Of course, the experimental versions is also only for experimental aircraft.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 be connected to a Garmin 196?

No, there is no interface compatibility between the Garmin G5 and the 196 GPS.

Q: Will the Garman G5 directly drive auto pilot servos? Or is a Separate control had like the 305 necessary?

It will drive a GSA 28 servo (Garmin G3X servo) via the can-bus input/output on the G5.

Q: Will the G5 interface with an non-WAAS GNS430?

Yes, the G5 will interface with both WAAS and non-WAAS GNS units.

Q: Can a 3rd Garmin G5 be added for the copilot position and be hooked into the other ones can bus?

No, there is only two unit IDs so a 3rd would need it's own connection to the pitot static system.

Q: You state below that a magnetometer cannot be used with two G5 units as primary EFIS. However the documentations seems to show that. It appears on G5 can be used as its primary function attitude indication and related and another can be used as a HSI/DG with a magnetometer, without a G3X! Please clarify this?

The GMU 11 can be used with two G5 units, so long as the G5's are tied together via the can-bus.

The only case in which a G5 can't have a magnetometer without a G3X is if you're using a GMU 22, which requires an interface from the GSU 25.

Q: Can Aircraft Spruce make up a custom harness for two G5s and a magnetometer with owner defined lengths? Basically two G5s together side by side, fed from two 5 amp CBs, and a owner defined length with no termination on it for the magnetometer. This would be to allow owner to pull harness through necessary fuselage and wing struts to get to location for magnetometer.

Yes, please contact our Avionics sales department and our team can build a custom harness with desired lengths and terminations.

Q: Can two Garmin Autopilot servos be connected to the G5 for both pitch and bank or does it require the G3X head to enable 2 axis autopilot functionality?

If you are running a stand alone system, then you will need the control head for the autopilot system. all of the units will be interconnected via the can-bus for control and display.

Q: Do you offer a pre wired harness for garmin g5 experimental?

Yes, if you order Part# 11-14315, we will ship the unit with the prewired 4 foot harness.

Q: May I send to the G5 VOR/ILS signals from any NAV equipment (Bendix/King, Narco, etc) or it must be a Garmin NAV like the SL30 only?

No, the older King and Narco products will not work with the G5 as they need a arinc 429 input and output.

Q: How/where is VSI displayed on the Garmin G5 experimental, and is it GPS or altimeter based?

The VSI is based on the static port input on the back of the G5 and is displayed on the side of the altimeter tape.

Q: Is it mandatory to order GARMIN GMU 11 MAGNETOMETER FOR G3X & G5 to use the Garmin G5 or is it working without ? It seems to be not provided in th G5 kit.

Yes. The GMU 11 is needed for the full functionality of the G5 unit.

Q: Does the G-5 for experimentals have an encoder? Will it work with my KT76A mode C?

No. The G5 will not output altitude information to the KT76A

Q: What is the speed range of the ASI on the G5?

Per the manual, the maximum indicated airspeed is 300 kts.
