WHELEN ORION 5001V 12V TAIL PTA LIGHT WHITE
Now fitted to a PA30C, excellent. Did need to increase the size of the hole in the rudder cap with a deburr tool, quite easily done. Replaced the old Whelen A500 strobe/posn vertical mount 14v.
Great Product- Easy to Install! Recommend to everyone to get more See and Avoid for Safe flying!
Good Value and looks great.
I like the tail light. I am upgrading my 1984 Starduster Too to LED Navigation/Position lights. As such I am working to use the existing installation mounts. This has proven difficult. After a few calls to both ACS and Whelen I found through a friend that ACS has a bracket I can modify to help retrofit to this light. I was frustrated that both companies could not find this bracket. Part Numbers: 11-06900 and 11-07000, see Accessories
Installed the Whelen - Orion 500 12 volt tail light/strobe on my Mooney M20C , was a major improvement over the original, and is really bright, Was very easy to install, Along with the Whelen -Orion 650 wingtip light/strobe and Whelen LED landing light my Mooney has a high visibility for other planes in the air. Money well spent for safety.
Good quality light and strobe had to make some modifications to the old bracket disassemble it completely and enlarge hole to fit new light removed old power pack also my A36 power is fed from one switch leg this will need to be tied into the position and strobe together that way both will work same time works great just took around 4 hrs Kyle
The STC included my 7ECA, but once it arrived it was obvious this Whelen unit was far to big for the Citabrias opening. Ordered a smaller--more expensive--AeroLED alternative. Returned the Whelen and am awaiting refund.

Per Whelen, the Orion 500 Series Lights are designed to be mounted on the tail area, vertical stabilizer / rudder etc facing aft. However, the mounting screw holes are at 12 oclock and 6 oclock, not 3 and 9, so a minor modification will be necessary.
Yes, the Orion 500 series (11-11975) is a LED replacement for the strobe style (11-03717).
We recommend shielded wire, the size will depend on the voltage of your system and the length of the wire.
No, these lights are intended for tail mounting only. For wingtip see the OR 650 series 11-11966.
No, a separate power supply is not necessary to run these LED lights.
No, if does not come with an 8130, but you can request it at the time of order for an additional cost.
It is recommended to run a separate power wire for each function. This allows the pilot to turn off the strobe function when it has the potential to interfere with ground operations and other pilots.
No. Shielded wire is not necessary for the Orion product line. Unshielded is acceptable.
It has a steady burn and flash(strobe.)
It will fit. It has the same footprint as a single bulb tail light.
