Configuration of the GDL 82 has to be done via USB connection and computer, this would include inputting your iICAO code.

Per Garmin, the only compatible GPS data sources are the GTN 6XX/7XX, GNS 4XXw/5XXW, or the GNS 480. The included GA 35 WAAS GPS Antenna would need to be installed.

Q: I have a Garmin G5 installed in my PA24-250. Can you use the GA 35 WAAS antenna that comes with the GDL 82 as a GPS source for the G5? If yes can the signal be split or is other equipment required?
The antenna coax cannot be split but you can run a RS-232 lead from the GDL 82 to the G5 to share the GA 35 WAAS information.

The Garmin GDL 82 has not yet received final approval. The units will be shipping as soon as that is complete, which is expected this month.

Yes, the ICAO code for your aircraft is a set registration number. For U.S. based aircraft, the GDL 82 install tool will automatically compute your ICAO address based upon your registered tail number. For international aircraft, your ICAO code can be obtained from your aircraft registration authority.
Q: I visited the Garmin booth at NBAA in Las Vegas 2017 and salesman said that it could be installed by an A&P mechanic and not have to go through an avionics shop and be certified/legal. I dont see any mention of that. Is that still the case?
The GDL 82 can be installed by an A&P, and does not require purchase or installation through an avionics shop. The A&P must be able to test the transponder to verify the installation.

Yes. This unit can be sold to both experimental and certified aircraft and it can be installed by an A&P.

No. The GDL 82 is only an ADS-B out unit. It does not perform ADS-B in functions and does not have any wireless capabilities. You would still need the GDL 39 or GDL 52 for ADS-B streaming to an iPad.

For the transponder antenna, there are female BNC (need male BNC ends) for the GPS side it is a female TNC (need male TNC ends).

PER THE GDL 82 manual: In anonymous mode, the GDL 82 transmits a temporary address instead of the aircraft's assigned ICAO address code, and a temporary Flight ID.
Q: I currently have a local shop installing a GDL 82 in my C182 and I assumed it would be compatible with my GTX 330 (no ES). I just saw the post saying it is not compatible with the GTX 330. Is that true?
The GTX 330 is a mode S transponder and the GDL 82 does not support mode S transponders. The GDL 82 only supports mode C only.
Q: When the GDL 82 is installed, will the transponder signal pass through the GDL 82 box to the antenna if the GDL 82 is turned off?
Per the Garmin GDL 82 manual there is a discrete line to annunciate GDL 82 failure. But it will not interfere with the transponder signal, and continue to transmit mode a/c.

I noticed that the GDL82 requires either 14 or 28 volt. what would I have to do to use the GDL 82?
14v and 12v are interchangeable. It will work fine in your 12v application.

The make and model of the aircraft, as well as the G-300s, is irrelevant when determining if this will work in your aircraft. The determining factor is that your aircraft is equipped with a functioning mode C transponder. We recommend having a transponder test done to determine that your transponder will pass and work with the Garmin GDL 82.
Q: Will the Garmin GDL 82 be compatible with a KT79 transponder and an existing A-33 Antenna?
Because the KT79 is a mode C this will work. Per the installation manual the antenna must be A-33W version to support WAAS.

The harness comes with power, ground, usb port, and additional discrete lines.

The gdl 82 is designed to be installed in an aircraft with a mode c transponder to provide ads-b out. So, if your RV has a mode C transponder, this will work great for your application.

Per the manual(page 10-2): the GDL 82 can operate without the squat switch. This is an optional function.

Yes, all aircraft are required to be ADS-B out compliant by 2020. The GDL 82 is not recommended for use with the GTX 328 since the GTX 328 is a mode S transponder. Even though the GTX 328 is a mode S transponder, it does not fulfill the ADSB requirement since it does not have extended squitter technology. You will need to upgrade your transponder, we recommend the Garmin GTX 335 which is a complete ADS-B Out compliant installation.
Q: Regarding the GDL 82 ADS-B box: Im using a Garmin 327 transponder and would like to know what the 10ft optional harness connects to, the transponder to the data link box or the data link box to the transponder antenna?
The 10 foot harness is terminated with the power/ground, rs-232 data line, and the usb programming port. Wires included but, not terminated to the connector, include the squat switch input, anonymous mode input, and ads-b failure annunciator interconnects. Connection to an existing transponder will require wiring the gdl-82 between your 327 output coax and your existing transponder antenna.
Q: Please tell me if GDL82 will work with GPS MAP 296 P / N 010-00356-00 transponder?
The Garmin GPSMAP 296 is not a transponder, it is a portable GPS. There is not connection between these two units.
Q: Can the RAMI AV-22 transponder antenna be used with the Garmin GDL82?
While the Rami AV-22 does broadcast on the 1030 - 1090mhz frequency, it has not been tested by Garmin on the GDL-82. Garmin recommends the CI-101 antenna, part # 11-17970 which has been tested with the unit.

Yes, you can perform the install, but you may still need a shop to sign off your ADS-B Out mandate compliance. Please check with your local FAA official to see what the process is to complete the mandate requirement sign off.

As long as your transponder is mode C and passes a transponder test, you can use it with the GDL 82.

Referring to the transponder antenna. Do not exceed 10 ft. The closer to the antenna you are the better.

Unfortunately there is not. You will need to either upgrade the GTX 330 to ES or get a new transponder. with ADS-B out capabilities.

No, this is not supported.

I am interested in the GDL82 with all of the wiring including the anonymous mode wiring and coaxs. dongle etc.
The difference between the two is that 11-15986 will include the wire harness. The wire for anonymous mode will be included. Coax will have to be a separate purchase. Please look at our custom coax cable assembly page.

A GA 56 will not work as well. The GA 56 is a non WAAS GPS while the GDL 82 requires the GA 35, which is a WAAS GPS antenna. To be 2020 compliant, you must have a WAAS GPS source.
Q: I currently have a GNC 250XL and a GTX237 in my RV-8. Can I attach the GDL-82 to the same GPS antenna I use for my GNC 250XL? If so do I use a splitter? Also, can I ever turn off the GDL 82 if I dont want the FAA to see me?
The GPS signal cannot be split from the antenna. Also the GNC250XL is not a WAAS GPS unit so it will not work as a GPS source for the GDL 82. The GDL 82 also has an anonymous mode setting that is activated by a switch.
Q: For the Garmin GDL-82, you mentioned for aircraft operating below 18,000’ in the United States, can this device operational in international ? and can the Garmin GDL-82 enable to be set up for as a receiver, besides functioning as output broadcast ?
The GDL 82 is only for ADS-B OUT only and cannot be modified for another function. The US is the only country with functioning ADS-B towers, however other aircraft equipped with ADS-B receivers will be able to see you as traffic in their units.
