Q: I know the STC for the Garmin G5 to be used as a primary HSI has now been approved. Will the G5 co figured for HSI receive glideslope input from a King KX 155 and will the WAAS position source for an Aparreo Stratus work with the G5 for a non-GPS equipped aircraft?
Per Garmin, the G5 will not interface with the KX 155. The G5 has an internal GPS which can be used with an external antenna or can receive GPS data from a GTN or GNS GPS source.
Q: Will the G5 HSI heading bug drive a STEC 50 autopilot in heading mode?
Yes, the STC'd G5 HSI now has the capability to drive an autopilot system. Supported autopilot systems are listed on our web page.
Q: Can this G5 act as primary for Attitude Indicator, Directional Gyro, and Turn Coordinator, HSI and Secondary for airspeed, altitude, vsi?
This G5 is only STC'd as a primary replacement for the directional gyro. It is locked in the DG screen and cannot display any other information.
Q: Our aircraft already has the Dynon D-10A EFIS installed. Is there any problems or loss of capability integrating the G5 DG/HSI into our system? NOTE: we will be connecting our GTN-750 as the GPS source.
We are not aware of any capability issues with these units and their integration.
Q: Will the Garmin G5 DG display Glide Slope from a GNC255A?
Yes, this unit will display glide slope information from a gnc255a.
Q: If I install two G5s, will the heading bugs move together when set by either knob? That is, the one on the G5 AI or the one on the G5 DG.
At this time no, as Garmin does not show the two units tied together in the install manual.
Q: Does the Garmin G5 show glide slope (vertical guidance) from a GTN650 during an approach with vertical guidance?
Per Garmin, yes, the Garmin G5 HSI will display vertical guidance during approach.
Q: What other parts will I need to buy so the Garmin G5 will work as a HSI coupled with a GNS 430 NON WAAS?
Per the G5 installation manual, the G5 DG/HSI will work with the GNS 4xx/5xx with either WAAS or non-WAAS. You will require the use of a GAD29B and GMU11 if you intend to use G5 for VHF navigation.
Q: The comment about the G5 DG/HSI not working with a GNS-430 non-WAAS is a little confusing. Two press releases say it works but you have to have GAD-29B too. Can you clarify this? Thank you.
Per the G5 installation manual, the G5 DG/HSI will work with the GNS 4xx/5xx with either WAAS or non-WAAS. You will require the use of a GAD29B and GMU11 if you intend to use G5 for VHF navigation.
Q: Is there a non certified version of the G5 HSI like there is a non certified version of the G5 ADI/EFIS? The G5 Efis says it has an HSI mode so would that basically be this unit w/o the cert paperwork?
Thanks
KM
The experimental G5 has the ability to switch between the AI/EFIS and HSI page using the control knob on the unit. The STC'd units are locked in either the AI or HSI, respectively.
Q: From maintenance & install manual it is not clear that the G5 DG STCd version will display navigation signals : VOR and ILS (LOC+GS) from a GNC255 unit. Please confirm?
The G5 will display GS and LOC needles when connected to a VHF navigation source such as a GNC 255.
Q: If Im understanding correctly, a G5 and a G5 DG/HSI are pretty similar to, say, an Aspen PFD. Other than maybe backup use, is there any reason I would need to keep my traditional airspeed, altimeter, AI, DG or VSI?
The G5 can only be legally installed as a replacement DG and AI in certified aircraft. The G5 AI and G5 HSI are the only STC'd versions available for the G5 at this time. You will have to keep your traditional airspeed, altimeter, and vsi.
Q: On multiple Q&A it is stated that the Garmin G5 DG/HSI is locked into DG/HSI mode. How then do we utilize it as a backup AI?
PER THE G5 TSO INSTALLATION MANUAL, THE BACKUP AI FUNCTIONS CAN BE ACCESSED BY - Backup Attitude Indicator -- All of the functions listed in 1.6.1 are also available by selecting the G5 HSI Menu via the knob and selecting PFD.
Q: Is the magnetometer included in the Garmin G5 DG / HSI part # 11-15015? If no, what is the reference number for this magnetometer?
Yes The GMU 11 magnetometer is included with the Garmin G5 DG / HSI GAD 29B kit. The GMU 11 can be ordered separately under part number 11-15077.
Q: In one question it is asked if the G5 will display GS/LOC information from a GNC255 and there is no mention of the GAD29B and GMU11. If I would like to install the G5 HSI with a Garmin 430W, will I need the GAD29B or GMU11 to display GS/LOC information when using GPS or NAV radio? I am essentially looking for the functions of a GI-106B while eliminating my vacuum DG. Can two G5s share one GPS source, IE one antenna to drive both G5s and a separate antenna for the 430W?
The G5 HSI can be interfaced with both a GNC 255 and 430W simultaneously with a GAD 29B. The GMU 11 is required to be installed when the G5 is configured as a DG / HSI. The G5 will function as a GI106B DG when connected to a VHF NAV source such as a GNC 255. In a dual G5 installation, a single GPS antenna can be used if the G5's are interfaced together via the can bus. Both units will share the GPS input from a single antenna source.
Q: I have a 530W, KAP140 can a G5 AI/HSI driver the autopilot? What additional information equipment would I need?
Yes, but you would also need the Garmin GAD 29B in order to interface your autopilot system.
Q: There is an option to purchase a 4 foot harness with this Garmin G5 DG / HSI. Is the harness generic or is it specific to what it is intended to be hooked up to? For example, if I ordered the unit with a harness, would it come preconfigured to plug up to a GTN650?
The 4 fot harness is power, ground, andRS-232 line. If ordered with the GMU 11 or GAD 29B, a can-bus wire is also included. If you require a special connection or lead lengths, we recommend ordering the unit with the custom harness so we can build it exactly to your specs.
Q: One question answer says the G5 will drive an S-Tec 50 autopilot. I dont see a left right output from the GAD 29 needed to drive the 50. Will the GAD 29B have the needed output?
The GAD 29B will have the outputs needed for the S-tec 20/30/40/50/55/60-1/60-2/65 as well as other commonly available autopilot systems.
Q: Does the Garmin G5 as an HSI display VOR needle bearing information (like an RMI),and does it display Flight Director bar information? The Aspen I have does both.
Per Garmin: The CDI is capable of displaying two sources of navigation: GPS or NAV (VOR, localizer).
Q: The title of the ad says the unit is a DG/HSI - STCs for certified aircraft. However, the answer to one of the questions states that only the DG is STCd and all other displays are locked out. So, is it STCd for only the DG or for both the DG and the HSI as the ad title suggests? If only for DG, the ad should be more clear the HSI is only for experimentals only.
This is referring to the STC for certified aircraft. When paired with an affordable GMU 11 magnetometer, GAD 29 navigation data interface and select VHF Nav/Comms or GPS navigators, G5 can serve as your primary reference source for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and/or GPS course guidance as well as providing distance and groundspeed indications. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/570665/pn/K10-00280-20# So, it can be used as an HSI when paired with the other items mentioned.
Q: Which features on the Garmin G5 can be used as primary and which can only be treated as secondary, and thus require separate instruments? Thanks!
