Overview

Complete kit for certified aircraft which includes G5 instrument, backup battery, installation kit, and STC redemption code. G5 requires certified WAAS GPS source, which can be fed via a GTN 750 / 650 series units. If no certified GPS source is installed in aircraft, you are required to install a GA 35 antenna for the WAAS GPS source. See Accessories for part numbers and pricing.

Garmin is pleased to announce the FAA approval of the G5 electronic flight instrument in type certificated fixed-wing general aviation aircraft. Installation approval is accomplished via supplemental type certificate (STC) with a comprehensive approved model list (AML) containing 562 aircraft models. The compact and cost-effective G5 delivers exceptional performance and reliability as a standalone primary source for aircraft attitude or turn coordination information while also displaying secondary information such as airspeed, altitude and more. Availability of this STC is representative of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) initiative to encourage and permit specific enhancements to aircraft in an effort to improve pilot situational awareness among the existing general aviation fleet.

Bringing Innovative, Cost-effective Technology to Thousands of GA Aircraft

    The G5 for certificated aircraft is approved for installation as a replacement for the aircraft’s primary attitude indicator or turn coordinator via a Garmin-held STC for hundreds of certificated fixed-wing aircraft models. Valid for flight under VFR and IFR conditions, the G5 electronic flight instrument is an economical upgrade for thousands of aircraft owners who are seeking an electronic attitude indicator with greater dependability and internal redundancy over mechanical gyro-driven flight instruments.
Greater Reliability and Increased Situational Awareness
    Boasting a bright, 3.5-inch sunlight-readable liquid crystal display (LCD), the G5 is approved as a primary source for aircraft attitude or turn coordination information and secondary source for altitude, airspeed and vertical speed in a single instrument. Installation is simple and easy as the G5 integrates with the aircraft’s existing pitot/static system to display attitude, airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, slip/skid, turn rate, configurable V-speed references, barometric setting and selected altitude as well as visual alerts upon arriving at the pre-selected altitude. GPS-based track and groundspeed information is also displayed. A dedicated rotary knob also allows for easy adjustments to barometric pressure setting as well as altitude and ground track bugs.
Seamless Installation
    Suitable for installation in place of a standard 3-1/8-inch (79.4 mm.) flight instrument, G5 measures 3-inches in depth and includes a back-up battery so it easily integrates into a wide range of aircraft. Installation is further simplified as the G5 needs only power, ground, pitot/static inputs and a GPS input from an approved navigator. The STC also includes interface approval to many common GPS antennas if an approved GPS output is not available in the aircraft. As part of the STC, the G5 for certificated aircraft includes a back-up battery with up to a four-hour power reserve. Pilots can easily reference battery status in the upper left-hand corner of the display. An STC permission letter will be granted for each aircraft in which the G5 for certificated aircraft is installed. To retrieve this STC letter, dealers will need to redeem the single-use registration code included in the standard kit by following the steps outlined on an information card. More information will be provided prior to orders starting to ship.

It sounds simple enough ... but the G5 replaced an AI that was constantly giving me erroneous information and suffered big lags. Not the G5. The display is bright and highly responsive. I’ve tried to throw it off with big rapid pitch and roll moves and the G5 keeps up perfectly. I trust this device with my life and that’s no joke.

Please note the G5 description says you must install a GA35 antenna. The GA35 is no longer an authorized antenna. You must use one of the glareshield antennas. The G5 accepts a BNC terminal. Garmin manufactures a TNC and BNC version of the glareshield antenna. The TNC version would require a TNC to BNC 50 ohm adapter.

The ancient vacuum system is gone. Installed two G5s and wired them to a Garmin Aera 660. One of the best upgrades Ive ever done for the plane. We were able to remove the vacuum system and associated instruments. The G5s get navigation information from the Aera 660 to provide a true HSI feel. Vertical navigation information also shows up on the HSI for VFR descents. Heading and altitude bugs work well as reminders. The unit does not interface with an autopilot. Getting used to the tapes instead of needles took a little getting used to. Airspeeds can also be programmed into the unit (Vx, Vy, etc...). Very happy with the combination.

If you remember the Garmin 100 AVD the G5 is in the same category. Useful, light weight, and revolutionary in that it replaces so many heavy failure prone instruments. Renovating a 64 172 - removed estimated 45-50 pounds of vacuum powered instruments and plumbing to be replaced by a single, lightweight, powerful instrument. Downside? Now I have to weigh the airplane.

Got both G5s with the GAD 29 and magnetometer. For 5 grand I got rid of ancient instruments powered by squirrels running around in a case that is called a vacuum pump attached to the engine. Lost 18 pounds of instruments and hoses and entered the 21st century. Good riddens to the old crap hello new. Lost weight gained reliability and safety. No brainer if you take flying IFR seriously in light GA aircraft.

Fantastic unit! I 100% disagree with the previous review that it is for VFR only. Who keeps their eyes inside for attitude on VFR flights? I installed for greater situational awareness for IFR flights. Greatly simplifies my visual scan of instruments. Heading and altitude bugs come in very handy. CDI is also available when linked to a GTN making shooting an approach even easier. Love love love this unit!

This is my 2nd G5, the first one I installed to use as my Directional Gyro, which they now call an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator). The Garmin GI 275 beats it hands down both as a Artificial Horizon or as an HSI. So does the Aspen E5. Anyway, the Garmin GI 275 is way easier to read and smoother, but its a clean $1,000 dollars more each, and I couldnt afford it, so bought another G5, but if I had an extra $5k, Id get a pair of GI 275s or the Aspen E5. With that said, I now have a G5 for the Attitude Indicator and one for the Directional Gyro (HSI). As a Attitude indicator its Ok, as a HSI, its ok, except for one issue. As a HSI, when my Garmin GPS 175 overheated, it shut off, and so did my auto pilot, when that happened my G5 HSI switched to the attitude indicator screen, so now I have two attitude indicators and have no idea what direction Im traveling in, and half my electronics are dead. Quickly pushing the knob, and rotating it to the HSI function and pressing in on the knob brings back up the HSI with a red X showing I lost my GPS input, but since its connected to a magnetometer it should still read the proper magnetic north (But it didnt, I had tie down chains in the baggage area just below the roof where I mounted the magnetometer and the metal chains interfered with it detecting magnetic north) so you still gotta glance at the magnetic compass to make sure the G5 as an HSI is indicating magnetic north and your direction of travel correctly. I would still buy it again, just dont mount it near the baggage area! I almost bought the AV-30 which looks way cooler and is cheaper. I am now installing two axial circular fans to keep everything behind my panel cooler so it doesnt overheat and kill everything. They do need replacement back up batteries after a few years, so if your vacuum powered AI or DG isnt broke, dont fix it.

Instead of rebuilding my directional gyro (DG), I paid about ten times a much for the G5 to use as a DG (now called an HSI). I had to buy some other stuff, such as a magnetometer to make it work. In my grumman the only place to install the magnetometer (i.e. device that tells the G5 where magnetic north is), was above the baggage compartment. The problem with this is, anytime I put something metal in the baggage compartment (tie down chains, tire pump, mountain bike), it throws off the new G5 north pointing arrow, so upgrading to the G5 HSI is not the mount and forget wholly grail of upgrades. But atleast I dont have to reset my DG contantly, and it does interface with my GPS 175 and I still would have done it. Just be careful where you mount the magnetometer, and cross reference it with your compass and GPS because the magnetic pointer on the G5 maybe off several degrees....just like the direction gyro you replaced!

I previously posted comments but have had problems since posting. unit indicated a 5 degree roll to left in level flight. tech support was unaware of issues with unit until I told him to google problems with Garmin G5 lost had this problem and software upgrade supposed to fix but did not. new unit still does not give a proper indication all the time. this unit is mostly correct, but I do notice from time to time it leans off 3-5 degress to the right . Not confident in this unit for IFR flight. I would strongly consider the Dynon unit.

Just installed in my Husky after waiting 3 months for availability. Screen is very small, essentially with the speed and altitude tape, it reduces that attitude indicator to about 2 inches square. Great unit but really for VFR only or use as a backup instrument. Due to small size, it would make IFR work a strain. I can only imagine how buggy your eyes would be after an hour in the soup staring at this unit. I think Garmin would be well served to add a feature or page that eliminates the speed and altitude tape, and thus enlarges the attitude indication

Q: Regarding the Garmin G5 Flight Instrument: Is the optional GPS antenna a required component to use GPS-derived groundspeed and track information? Or is it only needed in case the built-in GPS doesn't get adequate reception?

The external GPS antenna is required if you do not have a panel mounted WAAS GPS source to connect to.

Q: Does this have outputs to drive an autopilot? If yes, does it command roll steering?

No. The Garmin G5 will not interface with certified autopilot systems. Only the experimental version can be integrated with the Garmin G3X autopilot.

Q: Would a GPS antenna be required when installed with a Garmin 796/795 GPS ? If so, which antenna?

The Garmin 796/795 is not considered a certified WAAS GPS source. In this case, you would need the GA 35 WAAS GPS antenna for the certified source. See part # 11-09701.

Q: What additional hardware is required to connect to a GNS430W for a GPS position source?

In order to connect the two, you will need to connect the RS-232 data cable to the G5.

Q: Will the Garmin G5 interface with most autopilots?

The G5 DG/HSI certified version will interface with third party autopilots. Please refer to p/n: 11-15031 for more information on supported autopilots.

Q: I have a KLN 90B GPS installed in my Cessna 182. What additional equipment will need to be purchased to install this unit?

The KLN 90B is not an approved GPS source for the Garmin G5. You would need to install the GA 35 WAAS antenna. You will also need the hoses, fittings, and wiring to connect the unit to your pitot static tube and aircraft electrical.

Q: I have seen the G5 configured as a HSI instrument. Is this application FAA Approved yet?

No. HSI information cannot be displayed on the STC'd version of the G5.

Q: Can the G5 use an Avidyne 540 for the certified GPS source using a RS-232 data cable?

No. Only the GTN/GNS WAAS GPS units are approved. All others must purchase GA 35 GPS antenna.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 also replace my directional gyro?

No, this STC only approves the G5 as a primary replacement for attitude display or a turn coordinator.

Q: Can the barometric setting on the Garmin G5 instrument be switched to from inches to millibars?

No, the barometric setting cannot be changed from inches to millibars.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 for certified aircraft provide digital RS232 altitude encoding for Mode C, S, ES, ADS-B purposes? The experimental version seems to provide for this.

No, this unit is only approved as a primary EFIS for certified aircraft.

Q: Is it possible to set the speed in km/h on the Garmin G5 flight instrument?

No. Only Nautical (kt) or Statute (mph) are available.

Q: What are the conditions/ issues of installation in a Canadian certified airframe? is the FAA STC straight accepted by T.C.A.A. or would it require a Canadian STC?

If the installation includes Canadian aircraft, you will likely need a Canadian STC approval. If the installations are on non-Canadian transport category, then it would require a level 1 review (i.e. letter accepting use in Canada). If the aircraft is FAR 23 or equivalent and it is US state of design, it may not need any approval at all.

Q: What is the WAAS position used for in the Garmin G5? Does the unit still function as an attitude indicator on battery if the WAAS source is gone (electrical failure which shuts down a GTN 650 providing the source?)

WAAS GPS position is used for ground track and speed. Attitude information still available for 4 hours after complete power loss.

Q: Is the Garmin G5 EASA approved?

No, this unit is not EASA approved.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 be used as the backup instrument for Airspeed and Altitude in a certified aircraft therefore removing the standby analogue Airspeed and Altimeter instruments currently required?

No, the G5 is not considered a backup airspeed and altitude indicator.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 have to be installed by a Garmin approved dealer or can it be installed by an A&P?

An A&P can do the install.

Q: Can the G5 be used as a WAAS position source for an ADS-B transponder?

No, the G5 cannot be used as a WAAS position source.

Q: If I am not removing any required instruments from my PA28-151, can I installed the non-STC G5 unit for reference purposes only?

No. The experimental version can only be installed in experimental aircraft. For certified aircraft, you will need the STC'd version and check that your aircraft is on the STC list.

Q: I have an existing WAAS antenna for an ADS-B unit that has its own GPS source built-in. Can you recommend a GPS splitter so I can use the existing antenna on this Garmin G% electronic attitude display?

Unfortunately a splitter cannot be used when installing this unit. Part of the STC requires that you use a dedicated GA 35 antenna.

Q: Can the GA 25 remote antenna which is supplied with the Aera 796 be used as a GPS position source?

Yes, the GA 25 can be used with the 796 as a GPS position source.

Q: Does the G5 for certified aircraft come with the backup battery and the GARMIN G5 INSTALLATION KIT?

Yes, in the box is the G5 instrument, the back up battery, the install kit, and the STC permission letter.

Q: Can the White, Green, Yellow and Red speed limitations/indications be adjusted or specified on the Garmin G5 instrument?

Yes, you can adjust your V speeds in the Configuration menu on the G5.

Q: I have a Navworx ADSB ADS600-B with a Certified WAAS gps antenna. Can I use my current GPS antenna for the Garmin G5?

The Garmin G5 has a very limited interface based on the STC and at this time do not see this working.

Q: Is there an instrument panel flush mount available for the Garmin G5?

Yes, you can use 11-15457 for a G5 flush mount.

Q: Can I connect the Garmin G5 to the GNS430 non WAAS GPS?

No, the Garmin G5 will only operate correctly when connected with the 430W/520W WAAS GPS.

Q: Will the Garmin G5 function with a 430/530W without buying and mounting a second antenna?

The G5 will interface with the 430/530W via the RS232 for GPS data. A second GPS antenna will not be required.

Q: 1. Regarding the 5 foot option on the Garmin G5: A. What is it exactly? and B. If I dont choose it will I still receive the electrical connector that plugs into the back of the G5? 2. Ive seen a picture of a heading bug on a G5. Is this on the certified version or the experimental or both?

1) The wiring harness is the power, ground, and rs-232 wires pre pinned and connected into the wiring harness. If you choose not to purchase the harness, the stc kit still comes with the connector kit. 2) The heading bug is only available on the experimental at this time.

Q: Will the G5 connect to my GTX345 with built in WAAS GPS or would I require a second GPS antenna?

You need a second GA 35 WAAS antenna. The built in antenna on the G5 does not meet the requirements.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 STCd version include a heading bug or HSI?

No. The STC'd version does not include a heading bug or HSI. It is approved to be used a primary turn and bank or attitude indicator.

Q: If the G5 is installed by an A&P, can the A&P redeem the STC from Garmin or does a Garmin dealer has to install it to get the STC from Garmin?

The certified Garmin G5 can be installed by an A&P to redeem the STC.

Q: Can the GA 25 remote antenna be used as a GPS position source for the Garmin G5?

The GA 25 will work with the G5 but, would only be applicable to an experimental aircraft. For a certified aircraft, you would need the GA 35 antenna.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 be used in aerobatic aircraft?

Yes, per Garmin, this can be used in aerobatic aircraft.

Q: Will my existing GNS 480 W provide approved GPS position data to the Garmin G5?

The 480w will provide GPS data to the G5 over the RS232 bus. Per Garmin, to better utilize the 480w GPS data, a GAD 29 should be used to obtain ARINC 429 data.

Q: I have an Aera 660 hard wired in my plane. Can I connect the 660 to the G5 via RS232 and get navigation guidance to the certified G5?

No, you cannot tie in the Aera 660 with the certified Garmin G5.

Q: Can either version of the Garmin G5 send WAAS GPS data to another device such as an ADS-B device that lacks its own GPS source?

No, the G5 cannot be used as a WAAS GPS source for a device.

Q: I currently have a GNS530W that provides GPS WAAS data to a GTX330ES transponder (ADS-B out compliant). Can the Garmin G5 also be linked to this same connection at either the GNS530W (difficult to get to) or the GTX330ES (not so difficult to get to)?

The Garmin G5 would have to be connected the GNS 530W via a RS-232 port directly.

Q: Is the backup battery replaceable on the Garmin G5 after it's useful life?

Yes, please see part number 11-14314 for replacement battery.

Q: When connected to a Garmin 430 WAAS, does the G5 provide glide slope guidance?

Only when the G5 is a component of a G3X system will glideslope guidance be displayed. The certified version of the G5 is only intended for use as an attitude indicator.

Q: If the STC'd version of the Garmin G5 is installed by an A&P, does he or she needs to send a FAA 337 form?

No. Since the unit is STC'd, a 337 is not required.

Q: May a Garmin GTX345 ADSB Transponder with WAAS be used as the position source for the G5 primary attitude display?

Per the manual, no only GPS via GTN 650/750 and GNS 430W/530W products.

Q: Can the Garmin G5 be used as a back up attitude indicator for an Aspen PFD?

No, at this time the STC is set only for use as a primary gaugue.

Q: Can you use the Garmin GTX 335 output RS232 as a certified WAAS GPS source for the G5 installation?

The GTX 335 transponder w/ GPS will be able to pass the GPS data directly to the G5 as long as it is running software version 2.10 or later, but per Garmin the software update for the 335 to enable this for certified installations is not yet available.

Q: I plan on purchasing the GDL 82 when released. Will the GA 35 antenna included with that unit also provide a position source to the G5?

Yes, the GA 35 antenna is compatible with the G5. It is unknown whether Garmin will have the functionality enabled at launch.

Q: All the descriptions of the Garmin G5 say attitude OR turn coordination. Both pieces of info are available on the screen and yet there is some haze around the question of whether or not you can use the G5 to replace both the steam driven AH and TC guages or just one of them. Which is it?

The Garmin G5 can only take the place of one gauge: attitude or turn coordinator.

Q: Can one Garmin GA 35 antenna and a Garmin GTN 650 be wired to the Garmin G5 so if the power fails the G5 would still work with its own GPS antenna? If I understand correctly, only one GA35 antenna is needed for both G5s? Thanks

You can run a coax cable from the GTN 650 to the GA 35 antenna. You would run a data line (RS-232) from the GTN 650 to the G5. This will share the GPS signal as you cannot split the GPS coax to the antenna.

Q: What are you providing with the Garmin G5 harness?

This harness has power, ground and a data line to connector to other Garmin units.

Q: What is the maximum airspeed that the G5 will display?

Per Garmin spec sheet: the maximum indicated airspeed is 300 kts.

Q: Is the Garmin G5 STC'd model legal for a C421?

As installed by the STC, the G5 is not approved for the C421. The G5 is not approved for installation in any FAA certified aircraft that: • is approved for Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) conditions • has a gross take-off weight more than 6000 lbs • has more than 6 seats including pilot/copilot

Q: Can a Garmin GDL-39-3D provide the GPS data for a G-5?

No, the GDL 39 3D is not an approved WAAS position source. Only an approved WAAS GPS source can be used for the Garmin G5, for example, part # 11-09701.

Q: Are the accessories included to the item if we order it? or just only the installation kit, back up battery, G5 instrument, and STC redemption code?

Included in the box will be: FLIGHT INSTRUMENT, INSTALL KIT , BACK-UP BATTERY, STC PERMISSION LETTER. All other accessories must be ordered separately.

Q: Can I connect this G5 certified to a Garmin 496 WAAS source?

No, the 496 is not an approved WAAS source.

Q: Is the King KLN-94 a position source for the G5? It has RS-232 output that the Artex and ACK 406 ELTs can use, so will it work with the G5?

We unfortunately do not have any compatibility information on an interface between the G5 and KLN-94.

Q: Will the G5 HSI show vertical glide path for GPS approaches when connected to a WAAS GPS (like the 430 or 650 units?)

The G5 HSI can show vertical glide when hooked up to a VHF navigation source. This includes the GNS 430w and GTN 650, but can also extend to non-WAAS GPS units such as the GNC 255.

Q: I have a certified electric backup attitude indicator. If i still a G5 to replace my primary vacuum driven attitude indicator, does the stc allow me to remove my vacuum system?

Yes, but you would have to buy both versions of the G5 (Attitude indicator & HSI). If that was all that you had tied to your vacuum system, then this would be a good option for you.

Q: Is the RS-232 cable included with the certified G5?

The RS232 line is only included in the "with 4 foot harness" option. Please order part # 11-14582 to receive the RS-232 cable with the unit.

Q: Can the IAS and ground speed on the Garmin G5 be configured to MPH instead of KTS?

Yes, the unit can display either MPH or KTS.

Q: Will all the functions on the Garmin G5 work without the magnetometer?

No the GMU 11 magnetometer is required for certified G5 installations. However, the experimental version of the G5 does not require the GMU 11.

Q: I have ordered a GDL-82 with built-in WAAS GPS which I will get when you guys replenish your stock. Having said that, I can continue to use my GNS430 and GTX-327 without doing a major upgrade to the avionics. My question is, can the G5 use the RS-232 output of the GDL-82?

No, you will need to use either the recommended glare shield antenna, a second GA 35, or a RS-232 from the 430, if it is a WAAS model.

Q: Is the GMU 11 required for the G5 as Attitude display in certified aircraft?

No, it is only required for the DG / HSI.

No. The Garmin G5 (11-14579) does not come with an 8130. It would need to be requested at time the order is placed.

Yes the GPS 175 is capable of connecting to both your units and shooting LPV approaches.

Yes, the G5 experimental is able to communicate with the Aera 660.

Per the installation manual, yes, the GTX 345 can provide GPS to the G5.

Q: Can it be installed on a 1961 Cessna 172C? I dont see C models on STC, does that mean Ill have to pay an avionics shop to make pitot static sys modifications?

Yes, the 172C is on the AML/STC. Installing these does require connection to the pitot static system.

No. That aircraft is not on the AML

Yes part # 11-18411 includes the LPM.

Yes, the G5 can use the GPS155Xl for GPS.

Q: Is 530W or 430W acceptable GPS inputs for the G5?

Yes, the G5 will accept those units for GPS.

Q: Currently have dual STCd G5s installed. What hardware is needed to install the new optional OAT, TAS, and Winds functionality? Can the OAT probe currently installed for an EI engine monitor be used?

The GAD13 is required for those functions. The GTP59 from Garmin or the C307PS from Davtron are acceptable probes for this installation.

Q: What is LPM module ?

LPM stands for Lightning Protection Module. It is a safety enhancement feature to protect the operation of the G5 in the event of a lightning strike.

Q: Q: Does the G5 Certified version have to be installed by a Garmin dealer or can my A&P/IA install this unit?

A qualified A&P/IA can install these units as long as they are certified to sign off all the required paperwork and able to calibrate all required systems.

Q: Do I need the GMU 11 and GAD29B to be able to get LPV infomation from my gps to display on G5 in attitude?

Yes both the GMU and the GAD29B would be required and a compatible GPS navigator.
