Bought my D3 over a year ago as a backup. Im a vfr only pilot so I didnt see the need to spend thousands of dollars for a fully installed certified unit. All I want is a backup in case of my AI goes out and Im in marginal vfr weather. It works perfectly and mirrors my steam gauges. Its also nice to be able to look at one instrument in my scan and see multiple pieces of info. If I ever go to a glass panel, Ill at least have experience with digital readouts.

I recently installed my D3 in my 172B. The panel had enough room centered above the yoke to fit between all my other instruments without blocking anything (pretty cool!) I decided to install it with velcro to keep it ultra portable, however the vibration of the plastic panel caused the unity to read really funky. I was concerned it was defective. I pressed on and used one of the included cradle mounts to keep it more solidly mounted to the panel and that changed EVERYTHING. I am take pleased with the D3. Currently all my steam gauges work perfectly, and the D3 matches them for attitude perfectly. The synthetic vision didnt provide as much detail for mountainous terrain as I had hoped, but I think if it did, the easy to read sufficient horizon might not be so easy to read! All in all I love the unit and works definitely recommend it if youre on the fence. I continue to use my steam gauges primarily but its nice to have all of the plethora of information in one small tiny screen.

I bought this for my Kitfox model 1 mainly because the plane has limited flight instruments and a panel that lacks the space to add much instrumentation. It has been an incredibly welcome addition in that role since it is portable and battery powered. The portability also allows it to be easily moved from one aircraft to another. Ive used it in a (non-electrical system) Aeronca Champ where it was particularly useful as a battery powered EFIS and because it can easily be used for flying from the back seat where most of the panel is not visible. I also used it on a 5 hour cross country in a Skyhawk just yesterday in wintery conditions. Although the Skyhawk was well equipped, its a comfort to have the Dynon as a backup just in case. I have found the D3 to be very responsive, easy to setup, easy to read in direct sunlight, with good battery life and nothing really to criticize about it. It is a great piece of tech to have along.

I am very pleased with my Dynon D3 portable horizon. It was an easy setup and has worked flawlessly. I wanted more than a Turn and Bank indicator in my Citabria. The Dynon D3 has filled that safety gap perfectly!

Good value. Quick delivery and quick setup. Tested in a C160 Im training in, alongside the installed Garmin G300, before installing in my homebuilt. Response times and behavior appear identical. GPS reception appears good without the external antenna no issues with running it with or without that. Daylight visibility is good. Have not used the secondary functions in flight. Have not tested the full battery life. Two different mounts are good. The price point is good. Was considering a Garmin G5 but dont really need the additional functionality in that unit and the additional cost to get it all. Also, fifty bucks to the Aerospace Center when they need it is a bonus. Definitely recommend where appropriate.

I had purchased the Dynon D2 and while its performance was satisfactory the screen brightness left a lot to be desired and with the Garmin G5 having come out the D2 was inferior in my opinion. Recently my future son-in-law planned an avionics update for his Cherokee 235. The original plan was to go with Garmin, however, only designated facilities were allowed to do the install so we looked at Dynon and they have it right. Price, performance and the ability to allow an A&P/IA do the installation. That led me to the purchase of the D3 which will be used in a Zodiac 601HD but secondarily as a backup to a Cessna 182. The D3 is far superior to its predecessor and offers performance at a competitive price.

The D3 arrived the day after I ordered it, since I had already read the user guide on-line, couldnt wait to try it out. The software version was already up to date. I checked the default settings, held the unit near my kitchen window and in about 2 minutes it had a GPS fix and displayed the attitude indicator. The next day I mounted the RAM mount ball to the top of the glareshield of my 172, attached the D3 snap mount, used a small level to make sure the mount was perfectly level, inserted the D3 in the mounting brackett and adjusted the pitch and roll. Making the pitch/roll adjustment was a bit tricky at first, but I got it perfectly centered. The only down side was that I was not able to fly that day to actually try it out, but using it in the air will happen soon. The length of the USB charging cable turned out to be just the right length from the power outlet. I mounted it just to the left of the airspeed indicator so its not blocking my direct forward view but still easy to keep in a scan. Planning a cross country soon and will update this.

Have flown with the D3 a few hours and feel comfortable with it as a capable back up. Have it in its portable mount and easily incorporates into instrument scan. Pleased thus far.

To say I like my new D3 would be an understatement. I removed all of the old vacuum equipment from my Ercoupe, yet I still wanted and artificial Horizon. I didnt want to spend the money on Certified equipment, just to fly Day VFR. This works perfectly. The D3 does what it says but in my opinion it’s way too sensitive with its display if attitude and yaw. Especially in turbulence it gets close to the panel mounted instruménts but it tends to bounce mire

Great for a backup in a plane with steam gauges , unit was smaller then expected and hard to get pitch and roll adjusted . Screen has great resolution and great value for what you pay for it .

Opened the box and was happy about quality, the rams horn mount minus the suction cup assy. is what I used to mount it, there is a aluminum pad with 2 screw holes that I used to secure it on top side of glareshield, all the brackets, screws, nuts where all non magnetic so compass swinging wont be affected. Flew with it today and set it up, it was a little glitchy and the touch screen buttons didnt work very good at first but after about a 1/2 hr they started to accept screen touches better. Took a bit to fine tune it in the air but got it pretty close especially after screen accepted pushes also hit the auto brightness mode (huge difference better) I had the external antenna plugged in but the external indication was blinking on/off more then then it should it seems. Maybe it needs more time to find satellites? It wasnt rock steady like my vac. style attitude indicator but having both of these going would be a better situation in IMC. Noticeably more accurate then my Statux AHRS on IPAD using Foreflight.

Great product, but the description D3 lets pilots supplement their unreliable legacy instrumentation Really? you mean those unreliable legacy instruments we have been using successfully since the 1930s? I understand this is a great improvement and at a price point that lets even the thrifty enjoy the new technology, but for decades we have flown legacy instruments through the clouds with alarming accuracy. Hardly unreliable.

Works okay at best. I secured this to my panel and used the external GPS antenna that comes with it. The attitude indicator is jittery and jumps around a bit. It lacks smooth movement a lot of the time. Seems like I am constantly readjusting it to read correctly in the air. I used to mount my cell phone to the panel and used an Attitude indicator app that seemed to work better than this. I will say that the the heading, ground speed and altitude indications work pretty decent. For what it is I dont think I would spend the money on it again. A cell phone with the right app is probably just as good or better than this unit.

Works well for the purpose I bought it for, as a back up, independent of the other systems. Adjustments are not easy though.

Ive been flying with my new D3 now for about 6 months and I like it for VFR. However, it has started to have some problems - it will suddenly start losing the correct altitude and be off by maybe 1000 before it slowly recovers. Also, the attitude bars will also start being off, like Im in a climb when Im not. It will recover but take several minutes to do so. Then sometimes it just stops displaying, like it lost the signal or something and then later recover. So, I have learned that it is not a reliable instrument and I will be cautious in using it as a backup, especially at night.
